Description

Christian Regat presents his book on the bell towers in Savoy. A conference to discover the Savoyard bell towers, their architecture related to history but also to religion, which has often shown a specifically Savoyard originality

From the banks of Lake Geneva to the Mont-Cenis pass, and the Guiers valley at the foot of Mont Blanc, our bell towers have illustrated a millennium of architecture. They did so with a creativity always renewed, attaching themselves to the great artistic currents of their time, while showing, sometimes a specifically Savoyard originality. Isolated bell towers of the church, bell towers-walls, and porch bell towers, Romanesque bell towers and Gothic bell towers, bulb bell towers of the Baroque period, bell towers beheaded by the Revolution, bell towers of the Sardinian Restoration, neo-Gothic bell towers and neo-roman bell towers, bell towers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, bell towers where sings a carillon, without forgetting the cocks
The bell towers are numerous in Savoy and have evolved enormously in their style from the 8th century to the 21st century; the important Catholic religious fervor played a great role as well as the French revolution with Antoine-Louis Albitte, the Robespierre savoyard, who has beheaded a lot!
Saint Francis de Sales played an essential role in Faucigny in the development of the Baroque in the 17th and 18th centuries to assert itself in front of the Calvinists, Geneva is very close. In Faucigny, at this Baroque time the Savoyards chose to make bell towers with single bulb or double bulb, it is a very old pattern of Byzantine origin. The hawkers were enriched by their work and brought it back from their journeys to decorate their Savoyard churches and chapels. Can we think that the bulb reminds us of the onion that we plant and that blooms in spring, that it is round and that the snow slides easily on it?
Christian Regat’s book is beautifully illustrated with hundreds of photos.
